How trailing drawdown works
Three rules decide whether your account survives: when the threshold moves, which balance it uses, and where it stops.
Intraday trailing
The threshold chases the highest point your balance touches, unrealized profit of open positions included. That is Apex’s system: a momentary peak raises the threshold forever, even if you later close the trade at a loss.
End-of-day trailing
The threshold is only recalculated at session close using your best closing balance. That is Topstep’s and Lucid’s system: intraday peaks don’t move the floor, but a breach is still checked in real time.
Threshold freeze
At most firms the threshold stops rising once it reaches a fixed point: at Apex, starting balance + $100 (the Safety Net); at Topstep and Lucid, the starting balance. From there on you trade with a stable cushion.

Frequently asked questions
What is a prop firm’s trailing drawdown?
It is a liquidation threshold that rises as your account makes new highs: if your balance falls to that threshold, the account is liquidated. It starts at a fixed distance below your starting balance (for example, $2,500 on an Apex 50K) and climbs as you profit, until it freezes at a fixed point.
What is the difference between intraday and end-of-day trailing?
Intraday (Apex) raises the threshold with every momentary high, including unrealized profit on an open position. End-of-day (Topstep, Lucid) only recalculates the threshold with your balance at session close, so a peak you don’t consolidate doesn’t raise your floor. In both, touching the threshold liquidates the account in real time.
When does the threshold stop rising?
Each firm freezes it at a point: Apex when the threshold reaches starting balance + $100 (its Safety Net), Topstep and Lucid when it reaches the starting balance. From then on your maximum risk is fixed and further profits no longer drag the threshold up.
Does the daily loss limit burn the account?
It depends on the firm. At Topstep, hitting the Daily Loss Limit flattens your positions and pauses the session, but doesn’t eliminate the account by itself. LucidPro’s is a similar soft limit. Apex has no official daily limit: only the trailing drawdown rules. The truly dangerous line is always the trailing threshold.
